蘇陽 Su Yang | 中國

蘇陽，1969年浙江溫嶺出生，8歲移居寧夏銀川。2003年組成「蘇陽樂隊」，開始從西北古老的民樂中汲取靈感，尋找歌謠原始的根，探索音樂與廣大中國底層人民的關係。

 

2004年，蘇陽在銀川一個簡陋的小戲院門前，掛起了演出告示「土的聲音」，那天晚上，來自市井街坊圍觀的民眾，一路從門前擠到大街上，從人們眼神中流露的專注神情，蘇陽知道，他重新喚醒的是曾經與土地緊密相依的，歌謠與人的關係。從此之後，蘇陽走上一條將本土民樂和現代音樂融合的新路徑，以寧夏花兒為基調，歌中有西北沙漠的古謠與黃土的氣息，有為生活繁衍與奔波的人群，被公路和樓宇吞噬的家鄉，城與鄉的矛盾拉鋸，蘇陽唱出了離人群最靠近的聲音。

 

林生祥 Lin Sheng Xiang | 臺灣

臺灣美濃客家子弟，八音、嗩吶等傳統音樂是他深刻的音樂記憶。1994年，他和他的樂團「觀子音樂坑」投入聲援家鄉反水庫運動的行列。1998年，林生祥與美濃愛鄉協進會合辦「過庄尋柳」、「遊蕩美麗島」演唱會後，開始嚴肅地思考音樂的社會文化意義，而後決定回鄉，這也是他往後音樂生命歷程的重要起點。走過反水庫的交工時期，以及與各界樂手合作碰撞的時期，林生祥的創作廣度不斷跨越，濃度也持續增加。但他的關懷主題卻始終圍繞著土地與農民－既是他的起點，也是他的養分。

其後，陸續與詩人/作詞人鍾永豐共同創作多張專輯，獲臺灣金曲、金音多項獎項肯定，將臺灣草根音樂帶上國際舞台，是臺灣本土新民謠的指標性人物。

 

Su Yang | China

Born in 1969 in Wenling, Zhejiiang Province, China, folk rock artist Su Yang was eight years old when he settled in Yinchuan in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In 2003, he formed The Su Yang Band, where he started to capture the spirit of old folk music from China's Northwest region. That experience began his exploration of the roots of folk music and its relationship to China's underprivilged classes.

 

One important moment in Su Yang's career took place in Yinchuan in 2004. Before playing a concert, he hung a sign that read "The Sounds of Our Land," attracting a considerable crowd on Shigeng Street that evening. From the expression on the faces of people in the audience, who appeared to be neighbors of all ages rather than just young rock fans, Su Yang knew that his music had resonated with a general public. This re-awakening prompted a new project to bridge local folk music with more modern sounds. Su Yang dived into Ningxia's "Huaer" folk music, songs of the China's Northwestern desert, and unearthed stories that told of ordinary, everyday people struggling and rushing about to make a living. This world -- where "people's land" has been swallowed up roads and buildings -- is one where many are pulled and torn apart by the collision of urban and rural life. It is such a world, with such hardships, that Su Yang seeks to convey in his music.

 

Lin Sheng Xiang | Taiwan

The voice of Taiwan Hakka folk music, not to mention the most highly regarded of  Taiwanese folk artists today, Lin Sheng Xiang started his career by drawing from his activist passions. As a young college graduate in Taipei, Lin experienced a political awakening upon learning about plans for a government-built dam that threatened the survival of his hometown Meinung, in southern Taiwan. Lin decided to take to the streets, but in a way that made the most sense to him: with a guitar and his singing voice. His first band, "Guanze Music Pit" eventually became The Labor Exchange Band, one of the most influential underground Taiwanese bands in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Labor Exchange's original folk rock gave voice to the farmers in rural Taiwan fighting against a bullying government obsessed with "development" at the cost of the environment. Along the way, Labor Exchange became a widespead influence in Taiwan's burgeoning underground rock scene, which admired the band's independent and defiant, yet dignified spirit.

 

Today Lin enjoys high acclaim as a solo artist. He and his long-time collaborator, writer Zhong Yongfeng, have won the nation's highest accolades for four critically acclaimed albums released over the past decade.
